Lancaster City 1 - Wakefield 1:
SEVENTH PLACED CITY
Lancaster and Wakefield ended their season with a share of the points in a game where conditions made it difficult for both sides. The recent dry weather had left the pitch hard and bouncy but both sides did their best to adapt and the home side would be the most disappointed having squandered a number of chances.
Paul Dempsey had forced a good save from Mark Thornley in the opening minute before Wakefield took the lead after seven minutes when Thornley failed to clear a back pass giving Tom Denton the easiest of chances to fire home from close range.
Lancaster almost drew level after 11 minutes when Lee Dodgson played a good ball forward for Alan Coar who pulled the ball back for Dodgson to force an excellent save from Andy Woods. Woods also made a good save to deny Andy Teague from the corner.
Lancaster pressed forward and Dominic Ward missed a great chance to put them level after 22 minutes when he headed wide from in front of goal and then nobody was able to get on the end of an Aaron Helliwell cross that flashed across the face of goal two minutes later.
Lancaster continued to push forward after the break with Ward, Rob Wilson and Tom Entwistle all coming close before they equalised with ten minutes remaining when Wakefield full back Steve Nicholson lobbed over his own goalkeeper under pressure from Ward.
Wakefield almost snatched the lead again after 82 minutes when leading scorer Chris Howarth found space in the home penalty area but Neil Beesley, who had replaced Thornley at half time, made a superb point blank save to deny him.
Both sides looked for a winner in the dying stages but were unable to find the back of the net leaving them having to settle for a share of the spoils.
