Lancaster City 3 - Salford City 5:

CITY SINK IN THE MUD

Lancaster’s fading promotion hopes were dealt another setback when they lost at home to bottom of the table Salford in a game played in heavy playing conditions.

Salford took the lead after 15 minutes when they were awarded a penalty when Neil Beesley was adjudged to have fouled Richard Battersby although the referee initially seemed to be happy with the challenge but then changed his mind on the advice of his assistant.  Steve Foster converted the spot kick.

Lancaster drew level after 34 minutes when Danny Mahoney scored with a spectacular curling free kick from 30 yards following a foul on Mark Jackson.

Both sides had chances to take the lead before half time with Lathan Forrester almost putting Salford ahead again with a shot  that Neil Beesley got a hand to before Aaron Helliwell cleared off the line and Salford’s goalkeeper Matthew Edwards (on loan from Leeds Utd) made two excellent saves to deny both Mahoney and Lee Dodgson.

Lancaster went ahead after 47 minutes when a good run and cross from Dodgson gave Alan Coar the chance to head from close range.

Salford drew level after 57 minutes when a run by Stuart Rudd gave him the chance to cross for Foster to score.

A great interchange of passes between Mark Jackson and Coar gave Coar the chance to score his second goal but the lead lasted just two minutes as Foster secured his hat trick taking advantage of a mix up  between Helliwell and Beesley.

Foster put Salford ahead with his fourth goal after 75 minutes and secured all three points for the visitors by adding his fifth in stoppage time.
