Kendal Town 3 - Lancaster City 1:
CITY STOPPED BEFORE SEMI-FINALS
Unibond League Cup Quarter Final
Lancaster were prevented from reaching a second semi-final by Unibond Premier outfit Kendal Town. City did well to keep the score to what it was, as it was 3-0 at half time.
The visitors travelled to Kendal in the hope of a shock result against their local rivals and both sides had early chances to break the deadlock. The first dangerous moment wasn’t really a chance, but it gave City’s Martin Fearon a scare when Kieran Walmsley’s long free kick went wrong and looped over the ‘keeper and hit the post.
Mike Rushton should have done better after beating his defender in the box, hitting the side netting when he perhaps should have squared it. Kendal’s Alex Taylor came in at the back post from a Lee Mulvaney free kick but his diving header flew over.
Rushton had another chance to put The Dolly Blues one up when he got on the end of a Paul Jarvis pass. After being closed down by a defender he worked half a yard but was stretching for the ball and poked wide. On the half hour mark Kendal finally got their goal that they had worked hard for. Martin Fearon parried Carl Osman’s shot but Alex Taylor followed up to score. Two minutes later Gary Stopforth scored from 25 yards, a goal he was visibly proud of. Shortly before the interval Kendal wrapped up the victory via Andy Bell when he rolled a shot in from Lee Mulvaney’s pass. Lancaster had attempts from Jordan Connerton and Jonathan Smith blocked on the line in a scramble and Lancaster appealed for handball when Smith’s shot was stopped, however the decision went the other way.
Bell should have had another goal in the second period when he was one on one with Fearon, but he shot wide.
Carl Osman almost got on the scoresheet only for his shot to be blocked on the line by Neil Marshall. Jonathan Smith was denied his first goal for Lancaster for the second time in the game, this time by referee Paul Marsden. He ruled the centre-back had climbed onto his marker to head home Andrew Teague’s free kick. Jordan Connerton’s 30-yard effort went over the bar before he set up Adam Farrell for a well-deserved City goal. Connerton laid into the path of his strike partner, who slotted past Kendal stopper David Newnes. The hosts nearly got a fourth through substitute Gary Baker, who volleyed into the ground from Mulvaney’s cross, only for Fearon to save with his foot. Kendal progressed and go to Retford United in the semi finals.
