Lancaster City 7 - Woodley Sports 1:
CITY RUN RIOT
Unibond First Division North
LANCASTER CITY ran riot at Giant Axe on Saturday as they hammered Woodley Sports 7-1 in their best performance of the season.
It was a tale of two hat-tricks, two penalties, a sending off and eight goals; five in a thrilling first half were City played some of their best football in recent years.
The scoring got underway on 19 minutes when Jordan Connerton grabbed the first of his haul taking advantage of a goalmouth scramble.
The visitors hit back on 33 minutes counter attacking at pace, the move finished well by Daniel Queeley, but on reflection they were never in this tie.
Five minutes later and City were back ahead, Connerton was brought down by Liam Hogan, he was the last man and he had to walk; Farrell converted the rebound after his penalty was initially saved.
Two more goals followed before the break; the second penalty was coolly converted by Connerton after Paul Jarvis was hauled down and Roger Sharrock began his hat-trick in style. Michael Stringfellow played a delightful ball over the top, Sharrock held his run well, rounded the 'keeper and finished from a tight angle.
The Dolly Blues were impressive, Rob Wilson's ability to pick a simple pass and keep the game moving added a steadying influence to the middle of the park while Jarvis, Sharrock, Connerton and Adam Farrell ran the Woodley defence ragged.
Connerton's hat-trick strike was the pick of the bunch. Wilson picked up the ball in his own half, turned one man, shrugged off another and laid the ball to Sharrock. The tricky winger was afforded plenty of space against the ten-men of Woodley and his quick run, and lovely through ball set Connerton free; he finished emphatically.
There was still time for Sharrock to grab two more, both good finishes and for Tony Hesketh to introduce the returning Mark Jackson off the bench.
